In Vince Carter’s first real go-around at free-agency this summer, he did not have the typical opportunity to truly settle down once the season ended. His basketball future was on his mind as he thought about where he could see himself playing for the next 4-5 years. He ultimately chose to remain with the Nets, officially signing the contract on July 13th.
With the contract signed and the big press conference behind him, did Vince finally get himself some respite?
“I settled in last month,” said the 30-year-old Nets shooting guard.
“I definitely got a chance to settle in. It’s just summer as usual: basketball camps and enjoying the great Florida weather, and whatever else I choose to do – which is not much.”
Vince is back at the Nets practice facility in New Jersey this week running his Vince Carter Youth Basketball Academy.
Since Vince’s signing, things have changed in the Atlantic Division. Jamaal Magloire was added to the Nets roster, and, oh by the way, Kevin Garnett switched conferences and landed in Boston.
“A lot of talent, everyone’s gotten better,” said Carter, of the division which, since draft night, has also seen Ray Allen and Zach Randolph join its ranks.
“We’ll see what happens. ‘Can other teams put it together?’ That’s going to be the question.”
So far, the Nets have not made the blockbuster splash, a la Boston and New York, but they have bolstered their front line, adding the aforementioned Magloire and draft pick Sean Williams. Plus, 24 year-old center Nenad Krstic, who was averaging 16.4 points and 6.8 rebounds last season, will be returning from a torn ACL.
His return can not be understated.
“With Curly (Krstic) coming back, that makes us a lot better,” said Vince.
“I think Curly is a big part, a key part, to what we do. Mikki (Moore) was phenomenal for us…But it’s always good to have Curly back because he brings so much to the table, as well.”
Vince also gave kudos to big man Josh Boone, saying that it was great to see him coming to the facility “putting in his time.” Boone was there working out today.
With the flurry of moves made and the big names coming in, one thing will be for sure about the Atlantic Division next season.
“It’s going to be fun,” said Vince.
